Appointment of acting president
April 18, 2008

Dr. Woodsworth has resigned as president of Laurentian University effective July 31, 2008. She will be at Laurentian until that date, fully engaged in completing the drafting of the Strategic Plan and its implementation plan, and equally committed to advancing The Next 50 Campaign.

In accordance with the procedures for the selection of senior academic administrators approved by the Board of Governors and the Senate, a Presidential Search Committee has been constituted, composed of members of the Board, faculty, staff, the student body, and alumni.

Due to the fact that normal Search Committee procedures are unlikely to result in the appointment of a new president by August 1, 2008, the Board of Governors passed a resolution on April 17, 2008 to appoint Robert Bourgeois as acting president effective August 1, 2008, and until the new president begins his or her term of office.

Mr. Bourgeois is currently vice-president, administration of Laurentian University. Prior to joining Laurentian in March, 2007, he held government executive positions in policy, operations and corporate services, both in Ottawa and the regions. From 2002 to 2006, he served as deputy secretary, Intergovernmental Operations at the Privy Council Office (PCO). In this capacity, he was a senior advisor to the prime minister, the minister of Intergovernmental Affairs and the clerk of the Privy Council on federal‑provincial-territorial relations. He is considered to have had one of the more diversified careers within the senior ranks of government.

“The Board is confident that Mr. Bourgeois in his capacity as acting president will provide leadership and continue to move the university and its vision forward during the presidential search process,” said Carolyn Sinclair, chair of the Board of Governors. “Guided by the Laurentian University Strategic Plan and with the full support of faculty and staff, Mr. Bourgeois will ensure a smooth transition for our university.”

Information regarding the presidential search process will be available on the Board of Governors’ webpage at www.laurentian.ca, under the About LU section.
