Ethics

Laurentian University Research Ethics:

Upon presentation of your research thesis proposal and the approval of your supervisor and thesis committee, the next step is to begin the ethics process. All M.A. and M.Sc. thesis research must be approved by the Laurentian’s Research Ethics Board (REB).  The ethics application form can be picked up in the Research, Development and Creativity Office in room L-313. The form can also be downloaded from Laurentian University’s Human Subjects Ethics Policy website at http://www.laurentian.ca/Laurentian/Home/Research/ResearchEthics/.

The REB conducts two types of reviews:

  1. Expedited Review
Considers protocols that clearly pose no more than minimal risk. Expedited Reviews are reviewed by the Chair (or delegate) as well as one or two members of the REB.

  2. Full Review
The Full Review includes research that is considered to pose more than minimal risk. When this is the case, the full ethics committee must review the proposal.

School-Board Ethics:

If your research involves school-aged children as your population of interest, you must apply to the relevant school board for permission to conduct research within schools. This must be done after you have received ethics approval from the REB. It should also be noted that although you may gain permission from the school board to conduct research, that does not necessarily guarantee access to individual schools. Each school has the option to refuse even if the school board has approved.

Additional information concerning research in schools is available in the DEVE office.
