Cardiac Care on the Web is
- a professional development experience; by successfully completing six modules, you are eligible to apply for a Statement of Professional Learning at Laurentian University. In addition, these cardiac modules have been recognized by the Canadian Nurses Association (CNA) as appropriate means of accomplishing your professional development; nurses who take the modules are eligible to apply for re-imbursement of their tuition costs through the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario (RNAO),
- a way to accomplish specialty training and prepare for certification,
- an opportunity for registered nurses to achieve university-level credits for Laurentian University's School of Nursing post-RN degree program (BSNP).
Before you can begin your studies in this new and innovative learning environment, you need to do the following:
- Choose the courses (modules) you wish to study based on the course descriptions and the session in which they are offered. Please note: if you want to receive credits through Laurentian's School of Nursing, you must take NURS 2308.

Evaluation and Deadlines
Each one-credit course or module includes two assignments (a bulletin board assignment and a written assignment) and an on-line post-test. These items are the basis of the student's standing in a course. Deadlines for this work are established by your course supervisor. If you have a conflict with a deadline, you are encouraged to contact your Cardiac Care on the Web instructor as soon as you can to establish alternate and mutually agreeable due dates.
Your evaluation breakdown is as follows:
-
bulletin board contributions are worth between 15% and 30%
-
the written assignment is worth between 35% to 50% in all modules with the exception of NURS 2308; in NURS 2308 this assignment is worth 60 %
-
the on-line post-test can be taken any time the student feels prepared provided that it is taken on or by a final date designated by the course instructor; a student will be given two chances to take the test and 80% is a pass; this test is worth 35% in all modules with the exception of NURS 2308; in NURS 2308, the test is worth 25%
Each module involves approximately 25 hours of time. This includes reading, writing, participation on the bulletin board, preparation of assignments, and the on-line test. Because nurses are very busy people, you will want to assess carefully how many modules you choose to take, particularly if you have not taken an Internet course before. We have developed the following guide to help you decide how many courses to take:
-
If you are new to word processing, are not familiar with academic writing, and have minimal Internet experience, take one (1) module.
-
If you are computer literate, are familiar with the Internet, and are a recent nursing graduate, take two (2) modules.
-
If you are computer literate, are familiar with the Internet, and are currently enrolled in a post-RN degree program, take three (3) modules.
