Welcome to the Faculties of Social Sciences and Humanities which are home to about 190 faculty members in 13 departments with solid expertise in a wide range of disciplines: archaeology, Italian cinema, human development, linguistic rights, media studies, labour studies, geomorphology, history of Ontario, music, speech therapy, foreign policy, ethical issues, economics, and remote sensing, to name just a few. Passionate about their fields, our professors will explore with you the social issues of today. By engaging in debates with your fellow students, you will develop new insights into the world.

Active within the Franco-Ontarian community, the francophone members of our Faculties are proud to offer French programs in 9 of our departments. Our students come from around the globe and are encouraged to obtain the Certificate of Bilingualism offered by Laurentian University. Students may also choose to begin or continue the study of a third language, whether it be Nishnaabemwin, Cree, Spanish or Italian.

In addition to offering high quality teaching, our professors create a dynamic and stimulating environment on campus by organizing lectures and conferences in which you will be invited to take part. Some have written books that can be found in the library and the bookstore. Many are members of research centres such as the Institut franco-ontarien (IFO), the Centre for Local Government or the Institute of Northern Ontario Research and Development (INORD) and have built an international reputation. You may be inspired to continue on to graduate studies with an M.A. in History, Psychology or Sociology, an interdisciplinary Masters in Humanities or Human Development, or even a Ph.D. in Human Studies.

Many of our students get involved in one of the departmental student associations and help organize activities such as dinners or social gatherings. We look forward to welcoming you to campus!
