What can I do with my English Degree?

The Department of English sponsored a lively round-table discussion Thursday March 5 for all students in the English program to hear a panel of LU English graduates talk about what they have done with their English degrees:

  • Evan Bate, a graduate of both English and the Humanities MA program, now working in marketing at the Sudbury Theatre Centre
  • Dr. Lisa Laframboise, an English grad who is now both an English professor and an academic editor
  • Emily Mackwood, also a graduate of English and the Humanities MA program, Campaign Director for Sudbury United Way
  • Angie Robson, an English grad now Manager of External Relations for Vale Inco, Sudbury
  • Brian Soucie, an English grad now working in Development at the Cambrian Foundation

All five speakers spoke enthusiastically about the ways the skills and abilities in critical reading and critical thinking, effective writing, and communicating in a variety of media developed while pursuing their English degrees let to the jobs they pursued after graduation, and the life experiences and employment opportunities these provided.

The round-table also included a presentation from a faculty member, Bruce Dadey, who talked about the broad range of options in the field of technical writing, and concluded with an overview of career possibilities, resources, guides, and planning strategies from Jan Steven, in Student Services.

Students commented that they were quite “inspired” and felt “less stressed” as they looked beyond their graduations to their futures.
