Scholarships & Awards

Students of English are eligible to win a number of prestigious awards. The Dorothy Zaborszky Memorial Scholarship is given annually to the student who has at least an 80% average and is either an English major who has completed one course in Women's Studies, or a Women's Studies major who has completed one course in English. The 2010-11 winner was Christine Ball.

One of the two George M. Miller Proficiency Scholarships is annually given to the student with the highest academic standing at the completion of the second year of the Bachelor of Arts Specialized program, with a concentration in English. William Stransky won this award in 2010-11.

For outstanding essays in English courses, the English Department annually awards prizes. In addition to acknowledging the writers' excellent achievements, the tributes consist of a $50 cash award and the engraving of the winners' names on plaques that hang in the Department of English office. The 2009-10 winners were: Celine Laurin, Honours Essay Prize, and Adam Mason, Upper Year Essay Prize.

The English Department Bursary for 2010-11 was awarded to April Kelly.

Through a $50,000 endowment established by Mid-Canada Television two awards are presented each year to students participating in the Rhetoric and Media Studies (ERMS) program. The MCTV Community Proposal Prize, valued at $1000, is presented to a student (or students) who submitted a successful proposal to create a documentary video in conjunction with a community group. This year's prize went to Samantha Barnard,  Chad Brousseau, Sarah Corriveau and Candace Fuhringer for their proposal called "Free and Fun 4 Every 1." The MCTV Broadcast Prize, valued at $1500, is awarded to a student or group of students who produced a video with the greatest potential. The 2010 prize was awarded to Samuel Desrosiers for "Introspection."
