Scholarships and Bursaries

F. JEAN MACLEOD CONSERVATION ENDOWMENT

The MacLeod Conservation Endowment was established in the memory of F.Jean MacLeod of Sudbury in June of 1995. The Endowment is intended to provide scholarships to Geography students for fourth year research and thesis; and has provided, since Sept. 1997, bursaries for deserving and financially exigent Geography students, and third, to provide research, travel and equipment monies for the Department of Geography. To date the endowment has awarded 30 scholarships in the amount of $1,000 each; provided support via bursaries of $1000 for a further 75 students. For the academic year 2003-2004, six scholarships have been awarded and the endowment bursaries are supporting 12 deserving Geography undergraduates. The MacLeod Endowment has been and will continue to be a major and positive asset to the department's infrastructure greatly enhancing its ability to provide an excellent undergraduate degree program in Geography at Laurentian.

SCHOLARSHIPS

Donated by the F. Jean MacLeod Trust, the award is intended to support scholarship, and to recognize academic achievement in Geography and environmental studies. It has the purpose to promote student research on the environment of the Sudbury Region.

Student honorees will be determined by academic achievement upon completion of their third year of study in Geography or Earth Science Honours BA Programmes and prior to beginning their fourth year of study. To be eligible for the scholarship the student must intend to maintain standing in the program and enroll in the fourth year, taking either the Thesis or Directed Study option. The scholarship(s) will be awarded annually and has (have) a value of $1,000. The recipient(s) must achieve an average of 75% or higher during the third year of the program. The scholarship(s) awarded each year will depend on academic achievement and may be awarded to more than one student in the same year. The Senate Committee on Scholarships will disburse the award(s).

BURSARIES

The F.Jean MacLeod Endowment Bursary has the purpose of assisting financially exigent Geography students at Laurentian University. The bursaries are available to any Geography student, 2nd - 4th year, who has applied for OSAP monies and is either partially supported by OSAP or has been turned down by OSAP. Each bursary is in the amount of $1000 and is awarded to any student meeting the above conditions. The Student Awards Office conducts selection of students.
