BURSARIES OVERVIEW

 

The Elmer McVey Bursary

Sponsoring Organization:  Sudbury and District Labour Council

Value:  $500.

Conditions of Eligibility: Student must belong to (or have belonged to) a trade union affiliated to the Canadian Labour Congress; or the connection can be the current or former involvement of a member of their immediate family or must show a demonstration of participation in labour and/or community activism promoting the values of the labour movement and demonstrate financial need.

The United Steelworkers Bursary

Sponsoring Organization: United Steelworkers

Value: variable, but typically $1,000.

Conditions of Eligibility: A full-time student entering the 1st, 2nd or 3rd year of the Labour Studies program.  Selection is based on financial need and Ontario residency, as defined by OSAP.

The Evelyn Ham Bursary

Sponsoring Organization: Established by family and friends of the late Evelyn Ham.

Value:  $390

Conditions of Eligibility: A full-time female student entering the 1st, 2nd or 3rd year of the Labour Studies program, or any program or course dealing with labour relations. Selection is based on financial need and Ontario residency, as defined by OSAP. Application required.

The John Filo Bursary

Sponsoring Organization: Sudbury and District Labour Council

Value:  $500

Conditions of Eligibility: A full or part-time student in the Labour Studies program, must demonstrate financial need.  Application is required. The faculty of the Labour Studies program makes the selection.

Wally Majeski Award

Sponsoring Organization:  Workers Health and Safety Centre

Value:   $750

Conditions of Eligibility:  must be enrolled in the second year or beyond in the Labour Studies program, have a good academic standing and demonstrate financial need.  Preference will be given to a student who has demonstrated leadership in the social justice movement. Application is required.

CAW Dr. Peter Suschnigg Bursary

Sponsoring Organization: Mine-Mill and Smelter Workers Local 598

Value: variable

Conditions of Eligibility: must be enrolled full time in the Labour Studies program.  The candidate must be related to a CAW member and provide proof of this relation via a letter signed by the president of the local or national CAW office.  At the minimum, the recipient must be related to a unionized member of any organization and provide proof of this relation via a letter signed by the president of said union.  The bursary is awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need, and Ontario residency as defined by OSAP.  Application is required.

SCHOLARSHIP – ENTRANCE

 

The Laurentian University Faculty Association / Mine-Mill Bursary

Sponsoring Organization: LUFA

Value: $1,000

Conditions of Eligibility: the son or daughter of a member of the CAW/Mine Mill and Smelter Workers Union, Local 598, entering the 1st year of any program with the highest overall average in the final year of secondary school. A high school guidance counselor must provide a recommendation. Laurentian University Application for Entrance Awards required.

Deadline to apply: May 1 of each year
