2. The Jim Fielding Memorial

Established by his children, Norinne, Murray and Craig. Mr. Jim Fielding was born, raised and lived his life in the Sudbury area. He was proud to be a member of a large well known area family and he relished every opportunity to be in attendance at numerous family occasions. Jim held the position of Chairman of the Board of Alexander Centre Industries Ltd. (ACIL), Waters and associate companies. 3. Laurentian Wins National Engineering Competition
Sudbury (Ontario) - A team of Laurentian University engineering students have won 1st place at the prestigious Canadian Engineering Competition. They won the event, held March 18th to 21st in Toronto, in the Senior Team Design category.

The Laurentian team was made up of Samuel Carrière (New Liskeard, third-year mechanical engineering), Lauren Flett (Sudbury, fourth-year chemical engineering), Kyle Beaudry (Sturgeon Falls, third-year mechanical engineering), and Patrick Chartrand (New Liskeard, third-year mechanical engineering).

When asked why he chose Laurentian’s growing engineering program over other programs in Ontario, team member Samuel Carrière quipped “I didn’t feel that I had to go anywhere else.  Laurentian has an intimate learning environment and we have some of the best and brightest - we’ve just shown that Laurentian engineering is now in the conversation at the national level.”

"This is an incredible accomplishment," says Dr. Douglas McCreath, the Director of the School of Engineering, "We're so proud of the students who have distinguished our program as one of the best in Canada.  Our students won at the provincial competition for a second year in a row.  They now won at the national level."

Teams had to design and build a prototype that could be used to inspect potentially toxic products. They had to control the machine remotely to remove the lids off six different types of containers, check the composition of what was inside the container, then put the lids back on. The teams had 10 hours to do this.

“We are very proud of this group of engineering students.  They took on the best our province and country had to offer them, and won" says Laurentian University President Dominic Giroux.  "I had an opportunity to meet with them after they won the provincial competition, and let me tell you this isn’t the last you’ll hear from these four impressive young men and woman."

Giroux says high-school students across Ontario are increasingly noticing Laurentian's engineering program. The school received a record number of high-school applications for next fall, up 15 per cent over last year.

Laurentian's School of Engineering offers three undergraduate programs in chemical, mechanical and mining engineering. A co-op option, available for undergraduate programs, gives students the opportunity to work in industry, earn money, and network with potential employers. Graduate programs can lead to masters in engineering or applied science. A PhD program is also offered.
