Message from the Chair:

Welcome to the department of Mathematics and Computer Science at Laurentian University. As you explore the information about our department’s programs and curriculum and the home pages of some of our faculty, you will discover a diverse and student-oriented department. The department’s mission is to provide a stimulating environment for learning, gaining knowledge, sharing and exploring new ideas to advance the discipline of Mathematics and Computer Science as well as to contribute towards other disciplines where computing can play a critical role.

The Department has many exciting opportunities for students to explore. You will find some of them contained in these web pages. We offer 3 and 4 year B.A. and B.Sc. degrees in Mathematics and Computer Science. We also offer the 3 and 4 year B.A. and B.Sc. Mathematics degrees in French language. In 2000 we replaced our 4 year B.A. and B.Sc. degree in computer science with a bachelor in computer science (B.COSC). We also offer an Honours Bachelor of Commerce and Computer Science (HBCCS) degree since 2002, which is a joint venture with the School of Commerce with enrolment limited to students who have achieved an average over 70% in high school. We are currently at an exciting stage as we are developing a multi-disciplinary Master’s programme in computational sciences with departments of Biology, Chemistry, Engineering, and Commerce. We hope to offer M.Sc. degree in computational sciences in September 2008.

Since its inception in 2001, our Computer Science Co-op Program has built relationships with employers in corporations related to mining technology such as MIRARCO, INCO, Ministry of Northern Development and Mines, FNX Mining and other companies in Sudbury and some in nearby cities of Ontario such as Sudbury Neutrino Observatory (SNO), NCS Technologies, Century Systems, Vianet, RBB Innovations (Sault Ste Marie) Deloitte Consulting – SAP knowledgeable students (Toronto), Canadian National Defense (Ottawa), and Matrox (Dorval – Quebec). The co-op option starts in the winter term of second year and is available to students in B.COSC who have achieved an average of at least 70% in their first year courses. The co-op option is designed to provide students with valuable practical experience. Upon graduation students will have accumulated 16 months of solid work experience, making our students much more marketable to future employers. Our employers remark that our co-op students are among the best.

Our faculty members are dedicated teachers who are actively involved in advancing the state-of-the-art in such exciting fields as - Graphics and Vision, Database Management Systems, Software Engineering, Human Computer Interaction, Symbolic Computation, Digital Design, Cluster applications, Special Functions and Harmonic Analysis, Differential Equations, Number Theory and Linear Programming. They provide up-to-date knowledge of the latest techniques in mathematics and computer science delivered in a highly effective way.

The computer science department is located in the Fraser building with multi-media equipped classrooms and laboratories. Students have access to two modern computer laboratories within the department. Some of the entry-level classes are in the teaching laboratory with 32 PCs where students get hands-on experience. The department employs student advisors for helping undergraduate students in the laboratories free of charge. The campus fiber backbone facilitates access to the World Wide Web. The department employs senior undergraduate students to hold a MATH Clinic four days a week during the academic year where students enrolled in first-year classes can get help.

I encourage you to explore our department through our web pages or in person. You will find both faculty and students who are striving for excellence in both Mathematics and Computer Science education and research. If you have questions or would like more information about our department and programs please feel free to contact us. Thank you for visiting.
