Military Service Scholarships

The Department of National Defence, through the Regular Officer Training Plan, sponsors a program of university education and leadership training for young men and women with the potential to become officers in the Canadian Forces. Students in undergraduate programs taking relevant courses are eligible to apply for enrolment as Officer-Cadets to the Canadian Forces. Candidates selected for Military Service Scholarships may receive subsidies at either Canadian Military or Civilian universities. All are enrolled as Officer-Cadets and take full-time service training during summer months. Their academic fees are paid and they receive monthly pay, annual leave and other benefits. At graduation, they are awarded the Queen's commission and begin their careers as officers in the Canadian Forces. The Department of National Defence also offers the Medical Officer Training Plan and the Dental Officer Training Plan; both scholarship plans offer subsidies after the 2nd year of university training. St. John Ambulance Bursaries

St. John Ambulance (Margaret MacLaren Memorial Fund) offers bursaries, for study in Canada, to RNs who enter diploma programs or advance their nursing education in baccalaureate programs. Bursaries from this fund may also be awarded to experienced RNs for study at the Master's level in the field of community nursing, public health, or the equivalent. Preference is given to qualified applicants who are volunteers with St. John Ambulance. Application forms may be obtained, after January 1st, by writing to the Provincial Council of St. John Ambulance in the applicant's province of residence. Completed forms must be returned to the appropriate Council no later than April 1 (March 15 for the Province of Quebec).

The Registered Nurses Association of Ontario, Sudbury and District Chapter Bursary

Value: $100. Recipients: students in the Nursing program who are members of the Sudbury and District Chapter and who require financial assistance. Apply in writing to: Mrs. Liz Johnstone 203 Anderson Dr. Lively, Ontario P0M 2E0

Canadian Forces Personnel Assistance Fund - Education Assistance Loan Program

The Canadian Forces Personnel Assistance Fund offers the Education Assistance Loan Program to serving and former members and their dependants to help cover the expenses of postsecondary education. To be eligible for a low interest loan of $1,200, $1,500, $2,000 or $2,500, the applicant must have served in the Canadian Army, after October 1, 1946, or in the Canadian Forces, after January 31, 1968, and have a minimum of five years Regular Force military service (or be a dependant of such person). The loans are repayable over a 12-month period starting in September of the year in which the loan is awarded. The application must be submitted by the service member on behalf of the student. The deadline for submissions is June 30. Late submissions are not considered. Imperial Oil Higher Education Awards

Imperial Oil Limited offers free tuition and other compulsory fees on an annual basis, to the children of employees and annuitants who enrol in higher education courses. Initial awards are granted to students who commence postsecondary education within six years of initially beginning secondary school. Renewal of awards must be completed within five years of starting postsecondary studies. To qualify, a student must attain a min. 70% average in the secondary school examinations in the subjects required for admittance to the institution, or must have a min. 70% average in a postsecondary year upon which application is based. Courses may be taken at any Canadian university or other approved institutions and awards are tenable for a maximum of four academic years, or the equivalent, at the undergraduate or bachelor degree level. The Raymond Crépault Memorial Scholarship

Donated in memory of Raymond Crépault, Q.C., a long-time broadcaster, by the Raymond Crépault estate, Radiomutuel in cooperation with The Canadian Association of Broadcasters. Value: $5,000. Recipient: a French-speaking Canadian citizen interested in improving her or his skills in the area of radio or television, through university training or the equivalent, on a full-time basis in a Canadian institution. Nominations are accepted from applicants meeting any of the following requirements: university degree in any discipline (1st degree); university degree or current studies in communications (1st degree); graduation in broadcasting technology from a technical institute of recognized standing or the equi-valent; current employment in broadcasting, but wishing to complete training in this field. Relevant experience in electronic journalism or any related field is an asset. The scholarship may be renewed for an additional year, depending on the research project or course content. The Royal Canadian Naval Benevolent Fund

Financial assistance in the form of interest-free loans is available to members and former members of the Naval Forces of Canada, or their dependents, for the purpose of attending college, university or other educational and vocational institutions. Bursaries are also available from the Chief Petty Officer Andrew McQueen Jack Educational Trust Fund. The Rotary Foundation Educational Awards for Study Abroad

These awards were created to help advance the understanding and friendly relations between people of different nations by enabling a young person to study in an educational institution outside his or her own country. Each award includes payment of round-trip airfare from home to school, registration, tuition, essential books and educational supplies, room and board, plus $300 US or its equivalent for limited educational travel (approximate total value $10,000). Applicants must be outstanding students and demonstrate qualities of leadership, initiative, enthusiasm, adaptability, maturity and seriousness of purpose, be physically fit, and proficient at the time of application in the language of the study country and assigned institution. Applicants, married or single, for undergraduate scholarships must be between the ages of 18 and 24 before the application deadline and must have completed two years or more of university-level work without having received a bachelor's degree (or equivalent) by the time they commence their scholarship year. The Chaney-Ensign Fund

Administered by the Hamilton Foundation, the fund provides renewable bursaries to graduates of Hamilton (Ontario) secondary schools (public or separate) who have demonstrated financial need. Application required.

The Women's Advertising Club of Toronto Bursaries (2)

Value: $275/ea. Recipients: full-time students (female) enrolled in the 2nd, 3rd or 4th year of a program in advertising, marketing or related fields. Based on academic standing and financial need. Application required before November 22.

The Sudbury Regional Hospital Auxiliary/Volunteer, Laurentian Site Scholarship

Value: $1,000. Recipient: a Franco-Ontarian student who has completed the 1st year at a university or college in a health-related field with an average of 75% or more. Application required before September 30.

The Women's Association of the Mining Industry of Canada Foundation Bursaries

Value: $750. Recipient: a student entering the 4th year of a specialized Bachelor of Arts in Earth Science (min. 70% average in the previous year). Restricted to Canadian citizens or permanent residents. Selection is made by the association.Application required before December 1.

The Wood Scholarship Fund

Value: variable. The Women's Association of the Mining Industry of Canada, Toronto, trustee of this fund, offers scholarships to students enrolled in Mining, Mineral or Metallurgical Engineering and Geophysics programs. Application required.

Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 76 Bursaries

Value: up to $700. A varying number of bursaries are awarded annually to members (or their dependants) of the War Veterans (including non-members residing in the Branch 76 area), Ordinary or Associate Members or Ladies Auxiliary of the Legion Branch No. 76. Ontario Provincial Command and the Ladies Auxiliary of The Royal Canadian Legion Bursary Program

Value: up to $700. A varying number of bursaries are awarded annually to members (or their dependants) of the War Veterans (including non members), Ordinary or Associate Members or Ladies Auxiliary of any Ontario Royal Canadian Legion. Applicants must pursue postsecondary studies and have financial need. Application forms are available at Legion branches, Provincial Service Bureau offices, secondary school guidance offices and awards offices of colleges and universities. Other loans or bursaries relating to service in the Canadian Armed Forces

Various Armed Forces Benevolent Funds offer other forms of financial assistance. These are normally available to ex-service people (and their dependants) of both wartime and peacetime service. The Lemaire Cooperative Studies Award

Value: from $1,000-$3,000. Awarded annually to students enrolled in cooperative studies programs including the University's Honours Bachelor of Commerce in Cooperative Administration. The F.G.T. Pickard Memorial Scholarship Fund (2)

Created in honour of the late Dr. Franklin G.T. Pickard, Chief Executive Officer of Falconbridge Limited until his death in 1996, and a leader in Canada's mining industry. Value: $1,500/ea. Awarded in December to students entering the upper years of an undergraduate program (or graduate studies) in the fields of Metallurgy, Mining Engineering or Earth Sciences. Applicants must have good academic standing and outline positive contributions and extracurricular activities (academic nature or other). If there are no suitable applicants, the funds may be available as bursaries to students in the above-mentioned programs on the basis of financial need. Application required by October 31.

The Hélène Gravel Award

Established by the Gravel family in honour of the late Hélène Gravel, co-founder of the Arts d'expression program. Value: $1,000. Recipient: a full-time student enrolled in the 1st year of the Arts d'expression program. Applicants must demonstrate financial need and submit a short letter outlining how they meet the award criteria. Selection is made by the Gravel family. Application required by October 15.

The Association des bénévoles HRSRH Volunteer Association Bursary

Established by the Sudbury Regional Hospital Volunteer Association Board of Directors. Value: $1,000. Recipient: a student who has successfully completed the 1st year of studies at university or college, in the field of health. The award is given in two instalments: one at the beginning of each semester. To receive the 2nd instalment, the recipient must submit proof of ongoing studies in the chosen field. Application required.

The Toyota Earth Day Scholarship Program recognizes graduating high school students and Québec junior college students who have achieved academic excellence and have distinguished themselves in environmental community service. 15 scholarships of $5000 each will be awarded across Canada. A national winner will also receive a Panasonic CF50 Toughbook™ notebook computer.
